Joe Nuxhall, a.k.a. "The Ol' Left-hander," is most remembered for having been the youngest player to pitch in a modern era, major league game. He pitching 2/3 of an inning for the Reds on June 10, 1944 at the age of 15 years, 316 days The first batter Nuxhall faced was Cardinals ShortStop George Fallon, who grounded out. He then walked Mort Cooper, who advanced to second on a wild pitch to Augie Bergamo. Bergamo then poped out. Next, he walked Debs Garms. Stan Musial was the next batter, who hit the first pitch to him for a single. He then gave up three more walks and another hit before being removed. All said, in 2/3rds of an inning he gave up five walks, two hits and 5 runs. He returned to the majors in 1952 and later became a two-time All-Star (1955, 1956). Nuxhall retired in 1967 and became a broadcaster for the Cincinnati Reds and remained in that position until 2004. Nuxhall died in 2007 from cancer.
